Japan performs world-first commercial iPS heart-muscle sheet transplant
Osaka surgeons attach lab-grown cardiac sheets to a patient in her 50s after the regenerative therapy won conditional approval in March.

A hospital in Japan has carried out the world’s first surgery using commercially available sheets of heart muscle grown from induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells, after the therapy received conditional government approval earlier this year.
Surgeons at Osaka Keisatsu Hospital transplanted the regenerative sheets into a woman in her 50s during an hour-long operation on Tuesday, hospital head Yoshiki Sawa told reporters. The product — developed with Nobel laureate Shinya Yamanaka’s iPS science and advanced by Osaka University spinout Quarips under the Reheart brand — is designed for patients with severe ischemic heart disease who have exhausted other options. When attached to the heart, the sheets release factors that can help regenerate blood vessels and improve cardiac performance and exercise tolerance.
Earlier trials in eight patients eased symptoms in all of them, with heart function improving in four, Japanese media reported. Sawa’s team aims to treat about 75 patients by 2033 under Japan’s conditional, time-limited approval system, which allows limited clinical use while longer-term safety and efficacy data are gathered. Full authorization would follow if those results hold over roughly seven years.
Japan also granted conditional approval in March for an iPS-based Parkinson’s treatment. For Canadian clinicians tracking regenerative cardiology, the Osaka case marks a concrete shift from trial headlines to insured, real-world use — even as longer-term outcomes remain under review.
